“The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John opens by calling Jesus “the Word”, who was with God from the beginning. This chapter says God came close to us by becoming a man. It also tells how the first disciples met Jesus.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
A religious teacher named Nicodemus visits Jesus at night. Jesus tells him a person must be “born again”, a new start that comes from God. This chapter includes the best known verse in the Bible.
“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman at a well, someone others avoided. He offers her “living water”, a life with God that truly satisfies. She runs to tell her whole town.
“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Jesus feeds more than five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. Then he explains that he himself is the bread that gives lasting life. Some walk away, but Peter says there is nowhere else to go.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Jesus describes himself as a shepherd who knows each of his sheep by name. Unlike a hired worker, he does not run away from danger. He freely gives his life for them.
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.”
Jesus' friend Lazarus dies, and Jesus weeps with the family. Then he calls Lazarus out of the tomb alive. This chapter shows that Jesus has power even over death.
“Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed.”
On the first Easter morning, Mary Magdalene finds the tomb empty and meets the risen Jesus. Later, Thomas doubts until he sees Jesus himself. John says he wrote all this so that we may believe.
